Putting the Impact in Impact Investing: How to maximize for Social Impact

Caroline Bressan, Open Road Alliance

There is an ongoing debate as to whether there is a trade-off between social and financial returns in impact investing. In this debate, the question is often framed as, "Can you maintain market-rate returns, while getting impact as well?" or "How much impact can we get while maintaining market-rate returns?" These frames assume that the primary goal of impact investing is to maximize profit. In this panel, we will explore this question from the opposite direction. Meet funders who primarily seek to maximize impact. Why do they do it? How is it working? On this panel you will hear funders and entrepreneurs talk about how tools like recoverable grants can help bridge the gap between philanthropy and investment, all while maximizing for social impact.
